Day 18: July 22, 1997

We got up around 9:00 a.m., packed up our small bags, showered, and then went to a small family restaurant (AJ’s) down Magawagonish Drive a little ways towards the bay and had a lusty breakfast of eggs, bacon, and potatoes. Service was good. Then, under clear skies, we set out for home at around 10:00 a.m., following Highway #7 north from Saint John’s to Fredericton and then on to Edmundston.

We made such good time that by noon, we considered the possibility of driving straight through to home instead of camping again, or taking another motel room. We reached Riviere De Loup by 3:30 p.m., then headed west down Highway #20. The sky was clear and the roads were not busy, and we stayed on main highways (like #20 across Quebec) instead of the more scenic routes. The kids were very good in the car. For the last three or four hours, we listened to "Animal Farm" by George Orwell, in its entirety, which made the drive progress very quickly. We had some brief navigational problems in Montreal, which turned out to be more a lack of confidence in ourselves than anything else, then entered Ontario for the first time in 2 weeks. We stopped for dinner at a Wendy’s just over the border, picked up a few more cups of coffee and gas, and arrived home at 2:00 a.m. (adjusted time). We were a little surprised that you could actually do this drive in 17 hours, from Saint John, NB, to Kitchener, Ontario.
